  • Quotes from William Temple

"To worship is to quicken the conscience by the holiness of God, to purge the imagination by the beauty of God, to open the heart to the love of God, and to devote the will to the purpose of God. "

"To put it shortly, the Church forgets that Christianity is not an attitude of mind, but a type of life: a man's spirit is not known by his opinion, but by his action and general conduct."

"Knowledge of God can be fully given to man only in a Person, never in a doctrine. Faith is not the holding of correct doctrines, but personal fellowship with the Living God... What is offered to man's apprehension in any specific revelation is not truth concerning God but the Living God Himself."

"The life of faith does not earn eternal life: it is eternal life. And Christ is its vehicle."

"There is no hope of establishing a Christian social order except through the labour and sacrifice of those in whom the Spirit of Christ is active."

"If Christianity has never frightened us, we have not yet learnt what it is."

"If we are traveling heavenward, we are already in heaven."
    Chaplet of William Temple
    (based on Lectionary Lessons)

Cross:   Of this gospel I have become a servant according to the gift of God’s grace that was given me by the working of his power. Although I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given to me to bring to the Gentiles the news of the boundless riches of Christ, and to make everyone see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things; so that through the church the wisdom of God in its rich variety might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. This was in accordance with the eternal purpose that he has carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have access to God in boldness and confidence through faith in him. - Ephesians 3:7-12

Invitatory:  O God of light and love, you illumined your Church through the witness of your servant William Temple: Inspire us, we pray, by his teaching and example, that we may rejoice with courage, confidence and faith in the Word made flesh, and may be led to establish that city which has justice for its foundation and love for its law; through Jesus Christ, the light of the world, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

Cruciform:   Oh, how I love your law! It is my meditation all day long. - Psalm 119:97

Week 1  Your commandment makes me wiser than my enemies, for it is always with me.
Week 2  I have more understanding than all my teachers, for your decrees are my meditation.
Week 3  I understand more than the aged, for I keep your precepts.
Week 4  I hold back my feet from every evil way, in order to keep your word.
Week 5  I do not turn away from your ordinances, for you have taught me.
Week 6  How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
Week 7  Through your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way.
                                                       --Psalm 119:98-104

Final Cross:   The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth.  (John testified to him and cried out, ‘This was he of whom I said, “He who comes after me ranks ahead of me because he was before me.”’) From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son, who is close to the Father’s heart, who has made him known. - John 1:9-18
