From a homily by Pope Saint Gregory the Great :

You should be aware that the word "angel" denotes a function rather than a nature. Those holy spirits of heaven have indeed always been spirits. They can only be called angels when they deliver some message. Moreover, those who deliver messages of lesser importance are called angels; and those who proclaim messages of supreme importance are called archangels.

Whenever some act of wondrous power must be performed, Michael is sent, so that his action and his name may make it clear that no one can do what God does by his superior power.
A Prayer for those in the Armed Forces

    Cross:
Great Warrior, I pray that whatever trials I face from today until the last, judge me with righteousness as I serve to protect my home, my family, my loved ones.

Invitatory Bead:  We are not one nation. Rather one people of many nations, our salvation the same - to bring the world into unity with God.

Cruciform Bead:   Grant us peace, Oh God.

    Week Beads:
1st:  I call upon your name, Oh God, in this time of adversity.
2nd:  Walk with me into this dark place and be my light.
3rd:  Protect me from the forces that would put our world in fear.
4th:  May your holy Archangel, Michael, shield me with heavenly armor.
5th:  Defend my brothers and sisters in all branches of the armed forces.
6th:  Guide me throughout this day to go forward with strength, courage and honor.
7th:  I will not forget who I am or that my faith lies in your healing power.

Exit Cross:  Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.
    -- Ephesians 6:10-18
