    St. Augustine of Hippo Quotes:

  • God has no need of your money, but the poor have. You give it to the poor, and God receives it.
  • The honors of this world, what are they but puff, and emptiness and peril of falling?

  • What do you possess if you possess not God?

  • Unhappy is the soul enslaved by the love of anything that is mortal.

  • The love of worldly possessions is a sort of bird line, which entangles the soul, and prevents it flying to God.

  • This very moment I may, if I desire, become the friend of God.

  • God bestows more consideration on the purity of the intention with which our actions are performed than on the actions themselves.

  • I will suggest a means whereby you can praise God all day long, if you wish. Whatever you do, do it well, and you have praised God.

  • Conquer yourself and the world lies at your feet.

  • Anglican Chaplet of St. Augustine of Hippo
    (based on Lectionary Lessons)

Cross:  ...Since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us give thanks, by which we offer to God an acceptable worship with reverence and awe; for indeed our God is a consuming fire. -- Hebrews 12:28-29

Invitatory Bead:  Lord God, the light of the minds that know you, the life of the souls that love you, and the strength of the hearts that serve you: Help us, following the example of your servant Augustine of Hippo, so to know you that we may truly love you, and so to love you that we may fully serve you, whom to serve is perfect freedom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Cruciform Bead:  O LORD of hosts, happy is everyone who trusts in you. -- Psalm 84:12

    Week Beads:  Psalm 87
    1st:  On the holy mount stands the city he founded;
2nd:  the LORD loves the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob.
3rd:  Glorious things are spoken of you, O city of God. Selah
4th:  Among those who know me I mention Rahab and Babylon; Philistia too, and Tyre, with Ethiopia—"This one was born there," they say.
5th:  And of Zion it shall be said, "This one and that one were born in it"; for the Most High himself will establish it.
6th:  The LORD records, as he registers the peoples, "This one was born there." Selah
7th:  Singers and dancers alike say, "All my springs are in you."

Exit Cross:  Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.’ Philip said to him, ‘Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, “Show us the Father”? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it. ’If you love me, you will keep my commandments. -- John 14:6-15

Anglican Chaplet of St. Augustine of Hippo
(based on Prayers of St. Augustine)

Cross:  O Lord my God, I believe in you, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Insofar as I can, insofar as you have given me the power, I have sought you. I became weary and I loabored. O Lord my God, my sole hope, help me to believe and never ro cease seeking you. Grant that I may always and ardently seek out your countenance. Give me the strength to seek you, for you help me to find you and you have more and more given me the hope of finding you. Here I am before you with my firmness and my infirmity. Preserve the first and heal the second. Here I am before you with my stregnth and my ignorance. Where you have opened the door to me, welcome me at the entrance; where you have closed the door to me, open to my cry; enable me to remember you, to understand you, and to love you. Amen.

Invitatory Bead:  Give me yourself, O my God, give yourself to me. Behold I love you, and if my love is too weak a thing, grant me to love you more strongly. I cannot measure my love to know how much it falls short of being sufficient, but let my soul hasten to your embrace and never be turned away until it is hiddeen in the secret shelter of your presence. This only do I know, that it is not good for me when you are not with me, when you are only outside me. I want you in my very self. All the plenty in the world which is not my God is utter want. Amen.

Cruciform Bead:  Watch, O Lord, with those who wake, or watch, or weep tonight, and give your angels charge over those who sleep.

    Week Beads:
1st:  Tend your sick ones, O Lord Christ.
    2nd:  Rest your weary ones.
    3rd:  Bless your dying ones.
    4th:  Soothe your suffering ones.
    5th:  Pity your afflicted ones.
    6th:  Shield your joyous ones.
7th:  And for all your love's sake. Amen.

Exit Cross:  My God, let me know and love you, so that I may find my happiness in you. Since I cannot fully achieve this on earth, help me to improve daily until I may do so to the full Enable me to know you ever more on earth, so that I may know you perfectly in heaven. Enable me to love you ever more on earth, so that I may love you perfectly in heave. In that way my joy may be great on earth, and perfect with you in heaven. O God of truth, grant me the happiness of heaven so that my joy may be full in accord with your promise. In the meantime let my mind dwell on that happiness, my tongue speak of it, my heart pine for it, my mouth pronounce it, my soul hunger for it, my flesh thirst for it, and my entire being desire it until I enter through death in the joy of my Lord forever. Amen.
