***Casey, Michael. Sacred Reading: The Ancient Art of Lectio Divina. One of the best spiritual instruction books I have ever read. The best of the best on the topic of lectio, written by a Roman Catholic monk.
Casey, Michael. The Undivided Heart: The Western Monastic Approach to Contemplation. Collection of essays by this outstanding author, including several of lectio.

Pennington, M. Basil. A Place Apart: Monastic Prayer and Practice for Everyone. Simple, straightforward introduction to monastic practices.
The Rule of St. Benedict. One of the standard instruction and guidebooks on the religious life, dating to the 5th Century. Still fresh!
Rupp, Joyce. Fresh Bread And Other Gifts of Spiritual Nourishment. Year-long collection of meditations of scripture passages.
Salvail, Ghislaine. At the Crossroads of the Scriptures: An Introduction to Lectio Divina. Tiny, inexpensive booklet. Particularly useful because it contains prayers from Church fathers and mothers for the various steps of lectio.
***Smith, Martin. The Word is Very Near You: A Guide to Praying with Scripture. The other outstanding book on lectio, written by an Episcopal priest.
Squire, Aelred. Asking the Fathers. Fairly dry approach to the writings of Church fathers and mothers.
Thompson, Marjorie J. Soul Feast: An Invitation to the Christian Spiritual Life. Very accessible description of a variety of spiritual disciplines.
Wicks, Robert J. Handbook of Spirituality for Ministers. Substantial and useful collection of essays by professionals in the field of ministry.
